Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
